  1. 1943- . US Marine lieutenant colonel. In 1981
  2. he was inducted into the National Security
  3. Council (NSC), where he supervised the mining
  4. of Nicaraguan harbours 1983, an air-force
  5. bombing raid on Libya 1986, and an
  6. arms-for-hostages deal with Iran 1985 which,
  7. when uncovered in 1986 (Irangate), forced his
  8. dismissal and conviction on felony charges.
  9. He was born into a San Antonio, Texas,
  10. military family and was a graduate of the US
  11. Naval Academy, Annapolis. He led a
  12. counterinsurgency Marine platoon in the
  13. Vietnam War 1968-69, winning a Silver Star
  14. and Purple Heart. After working as a Marine
  15. instructor, as well as participating in a
  16. number of overseas secret missions, he became
  17. the NSC deputy director for political
  18. military affairs. North was convicted of
  19. obstructing Congress, mutilating government
  20. documents, and taking an illegal gratuity; he
  21. was fined $150,000.
